Tired of the shades of grey that make up your Windows 98 or 2000 desktop? A tweak of the Windows configuration may be all you need. Even if you’ve upgraded to Windows XP, you’re probably still using the default blue color scheme with a green Start button. With just a few Window tweaks to your configuration options you can make each window more exciting to look at as well as easier to use.
On all versions of Windows, your first stop should be the Appearance settings. You can get to these settings by right-clicking a blank space on your desktop, choosing Properties from the menu that appears and then clicking on the Appearance tab.
On versions of Windows prior to XP, the main changes you can make here are window colors and the size of text on your screen. Try experimenting with the different color schemes. Desert has some interesting sandy colors with hints of green, and Marine will give your computer an all-over aquatic feel. Lilac or Rose could be perfect for a girl's desktop.
If you have a vision disability or just have trouble reading the screen normally then you may want to use one of the High Contrast color schemes that were designed for just this purpose. The font size options will let you make text on the screen larger or smaller.
If that’s not enough for you, then download a demo of WindowBlinds. The WindowBlinds software lets you tweak your window layouts into wild and unusual designs.
If you’re using Windows XP then you have even more options available to you. Your Appearance tab will not only have the classic Windows color and font options, but also the new Windows XP Style options.
You can give your desktop a complete makeover in olive green or silver using XP's theme system, which changes the color of everything in each window. Other color schemes are available officially if you buy Microsoft's Plus Pack for Windows XP. Unofficially, you can use a window tweak program called StyleXP (available from www.tgtsoft.com) to apply free window themes made by anyone in the world that go even further than Windows' own themes or WindowBlinds to give you a really unique experience when you use your computer.
There are lots of other areas besides a desktop makeover that you can apply some Window tweaks. There are hundreds of settings that can affect your systems performance.
Making a window tweak here and there to your system can increase your internet speed by more than 200%. You can also reduce system crashes and just take control of your computer system.
The easiest way to do these window tweaks is with some of the software programs on the market. Changing the look and feel of your computer desktop is a great place to start.
