DSL Speeds :: DSL Providers

Filed under DSL

When looking for a new internet provider, particularly DSL providers, there are several things you should take into account before making a decision. The most important thing – DSL speeds that each of the providers claim to offer.

Speed of DSL is important, on both upload and download. The download rate is the speed you get when you are trying to download a file from another server. This rate tends to be relatively high, in comparison to the upload rate. A good DSL provider will give you at least a 150k/sec rate. These numbers can vary however, depending on the kind of service you sign up for with each DSL service provider.

Why You Need to Run Speed Tests on DSL

If you are paying quite a bit per month for DSL, you should be receiving your moneys worth. On the other hand, if you receive DSL for very cheap, you will not get the same download and upload rates that you should expect from a better service.

The upload rate is something that most DSL providers tend to be skimpy on. They tend to cap the upload rate at a small amount so that standard DSL users cannot use their connection to host their own server without paying a huge price for a higher upload rate.

Average speed of DSL uploads tend to range from 12k/second to as high as 20-30k/sec. In order to run a very large server, you need to have more speed so that everyone can be served pages in a relatively quick amount of time. The upload rate of a server is how fast it allows you to download from it.

A respectable server will allow something to be downloaded from it at rates of 150k/sec or higher, for comparison.

In addition to the speed of DSL, you’ll need to check the bandwidth limits the ISP uses. A good ISP will have a high bandwidth rate of 10 gigs up and down or more. Some, however these are more rare, will allow for unlimited bandwidth, which is something to consider. With these things in mind, you have the power to pick and choose your next ISP without being a victim to bad prices or marketing schemes.
