Many people love their reliable old computer... there isn’t any reason to toss it out. Just like cars needs a tune ups, computers can use tune ups.
Memory
Windows loves memory... the more memory the better it runs. How much memory does your computer currently have? A computer only a few years old probably came with with 32 or 64 megs of RAM. That amount of RAM maybe fine for word processing, and running your Checkbook software and even surfing the internet... but things can be sluggish. Adding RAM to at least 128 megs will definitely speed up computer performance, windows and make things run smoother.
Computer Clean Up
It’s amazing how many files you acquire while using your computer. Before you start deleting stuff make a list of all the software you use. Then go into control panel and use the Add/Remove Programs selection to get rid of all those unused programs taking up space on your hard drive.
Take some time and clean out all the old data files... better yet burn them out to CD. I’ve got 10 years of my kids school work all stashed on one CD. That’s a lot better than taking up hard drive space.
When that’s all done... clean out the TEMP folder and make sure you delete the files in your TEMPORARY INTERNET folder. You’ll do the last item through your browser.
If you have spent any time on the internet it’s also a good idea to check for spyware.
Have you downloaded a free program and wondered why it was free? It could be spyware? What spyware does is install a program that runs "behind the scenes" that monitors your surfing habits and sites you visit. It then reports this information to companies that in turn, may present you with banner advertising that "meets your habits".

Besides telling others where you’re going - the spyware is using resources that can slow down computer speed.
Now that all the "extras" are gone, do a defrag of the entire system and get all the files organized and straight.
I have a machine about 2 years old that is great and I use it all the time. It’s a standard machine nothing fancy. .. 400 mhz, 10 gig hard drive, CD burner and 32 megs. I boosted the memory up to 256 megs and run PC optimizer software that does a little windows tweak for more performance. Sometimes it seems faster then my current 2.0 ghz machine.
So if you want to improve the performance of that old computer and speed up your computer...do the following:
- Increase the RAM
- Get rid of the Extra programs you don’t use
- Clean out the old Data
- Delete the files from you TEMP folder and TEMPORARY INTERNET folder
You’ll have a machine that’s a lot leaner and meaner than when you started. Doing just these few items can speed up the computer, improve performance of Windows and clean up your PC at one time.
