High Speed Connection - Ready Steady Connect

Your PC is probably infected with adware & spyware if:

  • You have downloaded music online
  • Your PC is running extremely slow
  • You are pestered by those horrible popup ads
  • Your homepage keeps changing

Many providers offer High Speed Connections for Internet access. Many people in the US use the Internet from home connecting through a "dial-up connection" using a modem over a regular telephone line. Fortunately, many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer Hi-Speed Connections also known as broadband access - usually through a DSL connection (a digital subscriber line) or a cable modem.

The higher Bandwidth and faster connections greatly improve internet interactions and collaborations in teaching and research, hotels, cluster and grid computing, operating systems, distributed system structures, file systems and security, network measurement tools, and authentication. Broadband Connections provide maximum speed and sharing capabilities.

Hi-speed connections cost more than a dial-up connection, but an increasing number of consumers choose it because:

DSL technology can handle data and voice on a single phone line at the same time and cable technology uses a separate wire from the telephone.

Broadband Connections Risk

Hi-speed internet access offers many benefits, but also some risks. Along with their benefits, broadband connections can be a cause of viral attack and a target of hackers. A virus is software that is planted in your computer to damage files and disrupt your system. These can invade in the form of different spyware and adware, when you download movie clips, songs, wallpapers and other freeware available on the Internet. Because of always on connections hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide become infected by viruses that are programmed to spawn gateways, known technically as proxies, to relay Spam.

Recent for High Speed Internet Initiatives

Three Ohio universities have received a $400,000 combined grant from the Ohio Board of Regents Action Fund and the National Science Foundation (NSF) for early connection to the state's Third Frontier Network (TFN). TFN is a High-Speed Fiber Optic Network designed by OARnet* , the networking division of the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC). TFN will link Ohio 's universities, colleges, K-12 schools, and research centers to promote education, research, and economic development opportunities.

The grant includes $200,000 each from the Ohio Board of Regents and NSF. It will give Central State University , Cedarville University , and Wilberforce University new high-performance network connections (HPNC) to accommodate growth and allow them to benefit from high-performance networking and computing. Central State is leading the HPNC project management and collaboration among the three schools.
