Check Broadband Speed : Optimize Internet Connections

It’s easy enough to assume that you’re getting the fastest connection from your broadband provider and even easier to take their word for it, but if you check broadband speed on a regular basis, you’ll know for sure if you’re getting what you’re paying for.

Whether you’re using DSL, cable, T1 or any other type of fast connection, checking broadband speeds is quick and easy and can point to problems either with your system or in the physical line that can hamper your web surfing experience. To obtain an accurate readout of your broadband speed you can point your web browser to broadbandreports.com or one of the many other sites that can perform a speed test, usually at no cost. I like broadbandreports because not only does it offer a ton of information on different high speed services, but reviews of providers as well as a link for testing.

Compare Upload and Download Numbers

Performing the test is as easy as clicking a link and allowing an applet to load. The server will send a file to your system and then back to the server and give you a detailed report of how well your connection stacks up with just about everything else out there. You’ll also get actual upload and download numbers which I suggest you compare to the package you purchased from your provider to see if you’re in the ballpark or way off which would indicate a problem.

Should the numbers be less than expected, there are a few things that could be hindering your Internet surfing experience. Maxing out the RAM in your computer is a great, and inexpensive way to improve system performance. Also consider purchasing a program like WebRocket which operates in the background to optimize your system and Internet connection.

Even on it’s worst day, broadband is light years ahead of dialup, but making sure you’re getting the most from your connection and you high speed dollar makes the experience all the more rewarding.
